Focused on developing biotechnological
advances in stem cell research & regenerative medicine |
|
CHA BIOTECH was established in September 2000 by Pochon CHA University College of Medicine and CHA General Hospital Group to create a central, multidisciplinary research facility where the university's scientists and hospital physicians could come together and focus their efforts on
developing stem cell, gene therapy and regenerative medicine technology.
CHA BIOTECH is comprised of two research units - CHA Stem Cell Institute (CSCI)
CHA BIOTECH presently operates the largest stem cell research institute in Korea occupying a
modern 130,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility staffed with over 20 professors and 130 of the most prominent research scientists. The Company also successfully operates CHA i-Cord, a
cord blood bank, and a mobile healthcare unit called CHA Paramedic Service, both of which were rated #1 in consumer reliability surveys in Korea. As part of its global business strategy, CHA
BIOTECH expanded its operations to the United States in 2002 with the opening of CHA Fertility
Center in Los Angeles followed by the 2005 acquisition of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical
Center, a 434-bed general, acute-care hospital also located in LA.

The promise of stem cells
| |
A stem cell is a self-renewing primitive cell that has the ability to
differentiate, or change, into any other cell type in the body. Stem cells
possess two remarkable properties that distinguish them from other types of cells - the ability to self-renew indefinitely in an undifferentiated state
and the ability to develop into any cell and tissue in the body. There are
two general categories of stem cells - adult stem cells which are derived
from various tissues in the body and embryonic stem cells derived from
very
early-stage embryos. Due to their inherent unique characteristics,
stem
cells possess the potential to repair or replace cells damaged or lost by
disease and injury. Harnessing this potential is the ultimate goal of
stem
cell research. And applying this potential to treat diseased or
efective
tissues or organs in the human body is the goal of regenerative medicine.
The vision of CHA BIOTECH is to realize the promise of stem
cells in
regenerative medicine for the treatment and cure of human
diseases.

Innovative cell therapy development using stem cells
| |
The development and application of biotechnology of cell differentiation
and therapies using embryonic stem cells is expected to create a market of over US$600 million. CHA BIOTECH is focused on being at the forefront of this scientific research and revolutionary medicine. Our research teams are working to increase our bank of stem cell lines as well as develop
differentiation technology by using embryonic and adult stem cells for the treatment of specific diseases such as leukemia, diabetes, urinary
incontinence and cerebral vascular disease (stroke and hemorrhages) in our endeavor to improve the health and quality of human life. |
Individualized cell-based therapeutics, including therapeutic
0cloning
| |
Collectively with its patented technology in oocyte vitrification (freezing), human oocyte (egg) banks and global network of multidisciplinary
research institutes and hospitals, CHA BIOTECH is establishing a
comprehensive biomedical system and technology platform that can offer individualized cell-based therapeutics that includes therapeutic cloning.
The slush nitrogen-based oocyte vitrification technology developed and
used in our fertility clinics enables us to create a reliable human egg
source for producing individualized stem cell lines that are specifically
tailored to each patient's unique disease characteristics. The stem cell
research knowledge and technical cloning experience of our research
team combined with the global network of clinics and hospitals provide
the necessary infrastructure for the development and application of
innovative biomedical treatments based on therapeutic cloning. |
Innovative interdisciplinary & integrative organizational model
| |
CHA HEALTH SYSTEMS' organizational structure is both interdisciplinary
and
integrative in operation and approach seeking to leverage its vast
resource of knowledge, capabilities and experts in science, biotechnology
and medicine in the pursuit to develop breakthrough technology and find
a
cure for human diseases. As part of the CHA HEALTH SYSTEMS global
organization, CHA BIOTECH is well-positioned for the successful
development, clinical application and marketing of future cell therapies.
